Whac-A-Mole

I promised to release a new game I was developing for PSP for the last few weeks (mostly because of my laziness but still :D ) in my previous post, so here it is:
Whac-A-Mole v0.1 (tested on 3.xx firmware)
MIRROR 1
MIRROR 2 (more mirrors to come)
Screenshots:

Video:

OK, now some background info for those interested. It’s basically nothing new or innovative but it was a game I wanted to make for a while. The goal? Just whack as many moles as possible while still alive (Yes, alive… Life meter was the first thing that came to mind so it’s still in game because I wasn’t able to figure out a different name. Just pretend every time a mole pops up it bites a piece of you, worked for me :D ). It might sound easy but you get tired (and bored? :D) very fast. Check it out and you’ll know what I mean.
It took me a few weeks to make this game, not only because I’m very lazy but also because I re-designed it a few times. At first everything you see in the map looked different (All of the objects you see now where supposed to be there but positioned way differently). I showed some of the first in-game screenshots to my friend VEF4 and he made a quick paintover with his idea of what the map should look like and I honestly loved this design and started to build the map from scratch. Later I’ll try to find some of the old images, if any are left. Oh, and VEF4 was also the one who wrote a soundtrack for the game. It really brings depth and fun into the game.
There were also some problems with programming (or me being stupid :D ) that took some time to figure out. I even missed that I get out of range of the array, lol :D. And I really liked how it took me 2 hours to figure out why PSP restarts when I try to open a file. I had to move some of the header file definitions up to fix that (good thing I thought about trying that, because it all worked on PC and I thought something was wrong with PSP). There where lots of errors and bugs but I don’t remember most of them right now and they’re probably not as stupid as those. Anyway the post is long enough already. Will add info if find/remember something. Have fun playing!  posted by kenny.bsp @ 7:47 PM

Not dead yet.

It’s been a month and a few days since I posted something here so I thought I should probably write something just to show I’m *insert headline*. And not only that... a lot of stuff happened recently. Exams, Prom, four is less than three now and I’ve made a tiny game for PSP.
I guess I should start from the “get-a-life” part of news. Some time ago my CSS video I made and posted on YouTube a year or so ago reached 150 000 views which is quite a pleasant surprise. It’s over 160 000 now and still counting. I can’t believe it made it this far because it was basically just a quick something I made while bored. Oh and talking about YouTube… Yesterday I received an interesting e-mail from their mailing service, something about UMG rights and blah blah… Here it is:

It’s easier to show it then to tell about it… A picture's worth a thousand words. Some people might complain about the fact that ads are added to their videos but I think it’s just fine. I can’t get a license to use this music in my videos so this is probably one of the best ways to “pay” for it. Plus ads don’t appear all the time. But enough about YouTube, they have enough attention already. In other news I’ve been working on a simple game Whac-a-Mole. I’m sure most or at least some of you have played it. It was a quite popular arcade game I remember playing it somewhere back when I was a kid. Don’t know why but I just wanted to make it. At first I planned it on PC built on Ogre engine, but then my brother got PSP and I thought it would be a perfect platform for a little game of this kind. I’m not going to show anything from it not because I don’t want to but I’m just lazy and the game will probably be released the upcoming week. It’s not as attractive as I could’ve made it but will keep you busy for a few minutes. Why only a few minutes? Well for me it’s mostly because around the beginning of the level 6 I just don’t feel my thumb anymore. Anyway, I promise to release it as soon as I can. Don’t think something could go wrong because I still have a week of free time now before starting to work and hating myself. This release will probably bring some life to my statcounter page that has been sleeping for a while now (except records of people googling for a virus removal guide I posted a long time ago). After that I would like to make a Rubik’s cube game. Not because I want people to play it but only because I’m interested in making it. Might make some interesting gameplay mode, already have a few ideas. Oh and btw those are all 3D now. The engine is faaaarr not the greatest for rendering 3D but it’ll do the job. But enough about my dark (read as geeky) side. There have also been some changes in the real life. To be short… most important – I graduated. I had a prom this Friday and school is now officially over. Not going to tell how the night went but can only say that despite the poor organization I LOVED it. Sounds great doesn’t it? But one problem still remains… I don’t know (and won’t know for a month) the results of my exams. The funniest part is that I can’t even predict the possible marks because nothing went as I thought it would. Again… to be very short… The only exam I thought I will sure pass just fine was English, but after the first (reading) part of it all my assumptions crashed into the brick wall. I know it was stupid but I was so concentrated on doing tasks about dolphins infected with herpes that I missed one of the 3 tasks I had to complete. What’s more… I only noticed this when 3 minutes were left and I was already filling wrong answers in the answer sheet. I don’t remember if I ever panicked so much. Everything was made in a hurry with hands almost shaking… It was fun, really. It took me a while to regain my concentration, so I probably failed a few of the next tasks (listening was next and I couldn’t even understand what people on record were saying because I was still in panic). Another exam I was a little disappointed with (again because of me not something else) was physics. I completed about 60% of all the tasks so I don’t think the mark will be any good. Well… I’ll be happy if it’s greater than E (I don’t think there is a chance of getting F, but after what happened on English exam I believe everything can go wrong). The worst part is that I could’ve passed it just fine if I would’ve opened the book at least once. But it’s already late to think about it… All in all I’m happy it all ended and will not think about it till I get the results. Hope I won’t have to write that I panicked when got them. As usual this post was supposed to be tiny but considering that I posted nothing for a whole month I could’ve predicted this. MS Word’s word counter is already telling me “too much” so I guess I’ll stop for now and continue after I finish the Whac-a-Mole game. Hope it'll be soon.

Virus 2

Just defeated another virus that got into my PC because I was lame enough to double-click it accidentally. This time I won't describe the process because this one was quite easy to remove and fix the consequences. It’s nothing after you get regedit working and edit all the infected files from notepad (I love to do that just in case :D). The most interesting thing that got me laughing was the fact that it created schedule starts in “Scheduled Tasks” :D. Here’s a pic:

Thanks HVM31 (From the “readme” created by the virus : “Brontok.A By: HVM31-- JowoBot #VM Community --”) for such an interesting virus, it was fun dealing with it.

Pic

Took this picture today and thought it looks nice enough to be posted here.

I’m also thinking to start programming something now. I haven’t really decided should I work on a little project again or start something bigger but I sure will start working on something today.

Pong

I won’t be describing much. To be short… I completed it just a few hours ago and now am releasing it after playing it with my brother :D I already wrote that I might do 2 versions of the game so today as I was bored I made the classic skin and now am releasing the 2 versions.
Here are the videos(vimeo is overloaded atm so it might take a while) and download links for both versions:
Drop into PSP/GAME folder as usual.

Classic Pong:

There are still some issues with sound. I’m not sure but I guess there are some problems with memory. I’ll try to solve it in the near future or at least minimize its effect. I will be writing another small game in the upcoming weeks and after that start something more complex with different gameplay ideas, levels and stuff like that. Should’ve wrote “a proper game” but that’s kind of big at the moment. I’ll keep this page up to date with everything I do. Except the next game is a small secret because it’s a little bit unusual but I always wanted to do something interesting with PSP, something I home no one has done before, but I might be wrong because I haven’t played much PSP games. posted by kenny.bsp @ 11:54 PM
